Wanted for New Murder: Suspect Joran van der Sloot captured in Chile

Now accused of murder in Peru, chief Natalee Holloway suspect Joran van der Sloot, who has never been charged in connection with her 2005 disappearance and presumed killing, was jailed Thursday in Chile after apparently fleeing Lima, Peru, where a dead woman was found in his hotel room Sunday.
Police said Stephanie Flores, 21, appeared to have been stabbed to death.
At the eye of Thursday’s perfect storm of bad karma and bad luck, the steely-eyed Aruban was also charged with extortion by U.S. authorities in Birmingham, Alabama, Holloway’s home town, exactly five years after the college-bound cheerleader was last spotted with van der Sloot on spring break in Aruba. Her body has never been found.
U.S. Attorney Joyce Vance said the timing of wire fraud and extortion charges is strictly coincidental to van der Sloot’s arrest in Chile.

The federal complaint charges that van der Sloot, on May 10, extorted $15,000 from an individual as partial payment toward a promise to reveal the location of Natalee Holloway’s remains for $250,000. The maximum sentence on the extortion count is 20 years in prison.
Despite what appeared to be strong circumstantial evidence against him, neither Aruban, nor Dutch authorities ever did charge him– or anyone — in connection with Holloway’s murder.
Footage showed a buzz cut Van der Sloot, hair dyed orange, in custody of Chilean police Thursday when he was picked up as the chief suspect in the murder of Stephanie Flores. Witnesses said she was seen going into his hotel room early Sunday morning. He was reportedly in Peru for a poker tournament, strangely able to travel and live the high life without any visible job or source of income.
Experts say he is likely to first be extradited to Peru to stand trial for murder in a country that has no death penalty. If convicted, and ever released, Alabama might see him prosecuted for the extortion charges.

JORAN VAN DER SLOOT CHARGED WITH FRAUD AND EXTORTION IN BIRMINGHAM
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Federal prosecutors in Birmingham have filed a criminal complaint against JORAN VAN DER SLOOT, a citizen of the Netherlands, on wire fraud and extortion charges in connection with his soliciting money in May on promises he would reveal the location of Natalee Holloway’s remains in Aruba and circumstances of her death, U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance and FBI Special Agent in Charge Patrick Maley announced today.
“We are committed to protecting citizens from unscrupulous individuals who attempt to financially exploit a person’s deepest fears and greatest loss,” Vance said.
The wire fraud and extortion charges are unrelated to the ongoing murder investigation in Peru, in which van der Sloot is an alleged person of interest.
Vance said her office filed the two-count criminal complaint today in U.S. District Court in Birmingham.
The complaint charges that van der Sloot, on May 10, extorted $15,000 from an individual as partial payment toward his promise to reveal the location of Natalee Holloway’s remains for $250,000. The maximum sentence on the extortion count is 20 years in prison.
The complaint also charges van der Sloot with wire fraud for causing the $15,000 to be transferred by wire from a Birmingham bank to a bank in the Netherlands in furtherance of his scheme to defraud. The maximum sentence for the wire fraud count is 30 years.
Vance thanked Aruban authorities for the assistance they provided in this investigation.
Members of the public are reminded that the criminal complaint contains only charges. A defendant is presumed not guilty.

This young lady died in such a brutal way, all the evidence points to VDS. Sounds like they have plenty of evidence to get a conviction which i heard is 35 years in a prison that makes our prisons look like Hilton hotels. It is horrible it took another young lady dying to get this guy. I believe he is a serial killer, two that we know of (allegedly until convicted) in 5 years. I’m convinced he would continue to kill if he wasn’t caught. My sympathy goes out to her family. Hopefully the Holloways can finally sleep well tonight knowing this monster is finally locked up.

“On the Record” tonight with GVS, she led me to believe Natalie’s mother set this up, as part of a sting operation..If this is true could Beth Holloway also be charged? Or, are extortion charges only on the receiver of monies? I know the courts are slow, but had this been executed soon after May 10th, just maybe Joran wouldn’t have had 15,000 (down payment) to go to Peru, and kill the young woman…if he actually did it..I am still confused as to why the hotel staff didn’t notice something odd about the room for 3 days…If it’s true Beth Holloway was part of the extortion, I see it as a way to finally make Joran serve jail time for what she thinks he did to her daughter.. IMO

After a couple of months in a Peruvian jail, Joran may wish they had the death penalty.. Defacating in a hole in the ground, as mentioned on NG, is probably minor compared to the treatment he will receive there..It looks like his poker playing, and fun times are over…No tears for Joran Van der Sloot..

The extortion explains the money that he had to travel. One question: Can the Holloway’s civilly sue the Aruba government for failing to charge van der Sloot even after multiple confessions? Especially since he has killed again, meaning that if they had charged him and allowed justice to prevail
he would not have been free to kill again.

Interesting idea: could Stephanie Flores father sue Aruba, but more specifically the President, chief of police or a named official with wrongdoing or negligence that allowed an accused killer to roam free before it was a matter of time. In theory, why not, but governments are considered sovereign and usually immune, in most cases, from such suits. Would anyone have thought to sue the U.S. for Charlie Manson’s cult murders, or California authorities for failing to bust him in advance? Or the victims of 9-11 from suing the government or the FBI for missing the hijackers? If such things were allowed, doubtful many people would belly up to the bar to serve their country in these ways. But I’m open to experts in the field of government negligence…if they want to weigh in…Art

In no way am I trying to compare what Beth Holloway went through with VDS’s situation. However, just sayin…. maybe he will get just a small taste of what she was experiencing. Foreign country, different people, different language, scared, and just wanting someone to care. Let’s see how many people care about the “Foreiner” now. Also, Daddy isn’t here anymore to get the brat out of trouble. My prayers and (((HUGS))) to the Holloway family and also, Stephany’s family. Please, let’s hope prison authorities keep him under 24hr surveilance the thought of spending ‘life’ in a peruvian prison will no doubt be on his mind with suicide the only alternative for him and/or as with miss casey, think’s he will be walking out tall and into a $$$$$’s book and movie deals.
I shudder to think how many people he’s left out there before and after Natalee, a serial killer in the making.

I’m not impressed with the Aruba justicial system. Joran Van der sloot walked because of the influence of his dad who was a judge and they knew all along their son was guilty. It not by mistake that the father dies of a heart attack on the tennis court. Now Joran has nobody to cover up for him.

No, Aruba can’t be sued by either the Holloway or Flores families. Sovereign immunity. A government can waive sovereign immunity and agree to be sued, but in practice they do not do so because of the precedent it sets. And even if sovereign immunity were not an issue, to be successful in a lawsuit, the Holloway or Flores families would have to be able to prove that the Aruban government should have arrested and prosecuted Joran, i.e., that he was guilty of killing Natalee. Even if he is found guilty of killing Stephany, that would not be sufficient proof that he killed Natalee.
Unfortunately, various levels of the U.S. government also screw up regularly in ways that cost lives and cannot be sued for it. Your example about the missed clues that culminated in 9/11 is a good one. On a more basic level, John Evander Couey, who kidnapped and raped little Jessica Lunsford and buried her alive several years ago was a convicted sex offender who had not registered his address with law enforcement as required. They should have been out looking for him to find out where he was. They weren’t. So guess where he was? Working with a construction crew that was renovating Jessica’s elementary school. Jessica and her family paid in the most tragic way for the government’s mistake. That’s the way it is all too often, in this country and everywhere else.

I can’t help but too wonder…..are there any unsolved murders that are in the past path of JVDS? It just seems that 5 years between these murders seems to be a wide span of time for someone that is now being called a “serial killer”. If you read the FBI papers on the extortion charge it was signed 6-3-10. If Aruba was really cooperating with the FBI they could have taken Jordans passport away. He left for Columbia on May 10th. Aruba could have stopped him from leaving. But as usual Aruba did nothing.

Jordan could have been out to rob this woman who presumabley won 5 thousand at the casino. Did he really go through 15 thousand in less than 20 days.
We all know Joran will lie in his statement to the police. I only hope that have positive evidence of his commiting this crime.
There are documentaries on Peruvian prisons and in my opinion this the right place for Joran to spend the rest or his life or at least 35 years.
The Judicial system is way different from ours. If he is tried he will face three judges no jury involved. In Peru you are guilty until proven innocent. Your Lawyer does not need to present. You can wait up to four year in prison for your trial. Jordan FAther died in Feb so he will no longer be able to protect him as he did in Aruba. No Political infulence in Peru for Jordan this this time. Preu puts ARuba to shame.
I hope the Kalpo brother are nervous right now. It might be a good time for them to leave Aruba.

Most of the news is in Spanish. Difficult to translate But so far we know this woman was brutally beated to the point of not being recognisable by her brother. Her neck was broken and an eye ball was missing. She had defense wounds. They are still checking for evidence of rape.
A tennis recket was found in the room. Joran Dad died while playing tennis. Joran was a tennis player used to do sets with his FAther. Swing a tennis racket at someone could prevent them from getting in any good defense punches. Joran is very tall. Size thirteen shoe.. Friends say Jorans was broke and begging people to give him money.
Sounds like a desperate violent man to me. But I had to laugh when I saw his red orange hair and eyebrows. Remined me of Peterson. Oh Karma.

Is it feasible to assume that Joran had gambling debts mounting? This boy loves casinos and his father when he was alive allegedly set him up with a $50,000.00 line of credit(at 17 years of age) to gamble in Aruba. Could someone say that maybe Joran, plundered away a fortune gambling and was exploiting Natalee Holloway’s death to finance his loses? Could he have killed Ms Flores, for her money, so he could pay for loans from unsavory criminal elements? Maybe Van Der Sloot is standing in deep muck and has folks gunning for him, inside and out of the law. He’s just not in a good place in his life,at this time!!

Joran’s Dad could have left him a sizable inheritance, affording him travels, and play time..I am not so sure Joran killed the girl in Peru..This was overkill, with a baseball bat (stated on NG tonight).Where did the bat come from? Did Joran travel with it? not likely…An eyeball was missing..Joran does not have one scratch on him..How can that be? I’m starting to think someone could have entered the room after Joran left..maybe someone Joran met at the Casino and owed money to..The killer went there looking for Joran, and committed a revenge killing on Flores when he couldn’t find Joran..Joran has been branded a killer for five years. It would be easy to pin him with a crime he didn’t commit..All speculation, of course..I am sure this case will be solved because of the father of the girl, his prominence in Peru, and the brutality of the murder..The FBI dropped the ball..Joran should not have been allowed to travel on May 13, three days after the extortion deal..What was the reason for not arresting him?

Joran is now in the Peruvian Jail, but if found guilty, lets hope he is not one of the international prisoners that has the option to serve his term in a Prison in the Country he is from.This is what Peru has been doing to cut down on the over load of their prison population.That could be one of the things the Dutch officials that visited him today mentioned to him. I do hope there is fingure prints etc. on the bat or tennis racket that was used to murder this girl.If Natalie Holloways Mother did send money to him for imformation of her death or location, I pray people do not blame her for the death of the girl in Peru. As a mother I would have done the same thing to try to trap him. My prays go out to both familys.

I believe that Aruba covered everything up about NH. It was not only his Dad ,LE ,the Court system and the Kalope brothers.
I look at this Country and the Netherlands with much distain. I visted Aruba before this happen but would never spend my money there again.
To much corruption. I blame them for this young woman life. The shame of their justice system will not be forgotten. The Flores FAmily grief is heart breaking.
We have the image of Joran trying to sell women in Tialand to the Netherlands for prostitution under the guise of becoming exotic dancers. What did the Netherrlands do? Nothing.. He should have been arrested for trafficing then.
Now the Netherlands say they will not provide Joran with legal counsel and they raided to residences in the Netherland today and conficated electronic euiptment at the US request. Why now it has been five years. Are they trying to improve their image.
They allowed Joran to commit murder and get away with it then. Aruba best take a good look and start doing changes to their Justice system or it will become a Country everyone shuns. Sorry for the rant. But what ever happens to Joran I know Beth and Mr. Flores will never quit after what happen to their daughters.

I think Beth should view the prison system in Peru. 2 1/2 years Joran perhaps will wait for trial in Prison. Perhaps if he lives for 2 1/2 years he would be willing to shout from the roof tops what happen to NH to get out of there. I think he is a coward. Joran will sing like a canary to get himself out of the Peruvian prison.
I have no doubt that he will go to prison to await trial. He is a flight risk.

In Peru prison there are 10 thousand inmates and 100 guards.. The prisoners rule the prison and keep order. To make money for food the sell themselves for prostitution, some a tatatoo artists, they settle disputes by playing a game of scoccer, sell drugs. Their familes bring them clothes and food. You could be killed if you don’t share your food. They carry all sorts of weapons. They live in different communes usually the gang they belong to. They must obey the rules of the communes or they are consider outcasts and live in a street like area and get their food from the garbage pile.
Reason this a poor country and there are no taxes to support the prisons. So prisoners live everyday in fear for their lives. National Goegraphic has a good series on this.

I am so elated that this monster is now caught!! I hope there will be enough for Aruba to re-open Natalies case so Joran can be held accountable on both cases plus the extortion. I pray Joran never gets out of prison and the remaining days he has left on this earth, he is tortured for what he has done.

In the new video showing Joran and Stephany entering the hotel lobby, entering the room, and Joran leaving four hours later (Fox News), Stephany isn’t carrying a purse, yet her cell, keys and purse were found in the hotel room. Did Joran go retrieve them after they arrived at the room? Why would Stephany be so careless with 5,000 she won at the Casino? In the video of Joran leaving the room at 9am he doesn’t look like a man who had just brutally murdered a woman..I didn’t see scratches…He was moving about as he normally does..I am in no way defending him, and I feel sure there is enough evidence to charge him, but somethings just seen odd..The timing of the extortion event is puzzling as well.. JMO

Hi Art, Many things about this incident don’t add up. Most strikingly is the five years to the day piece. Coincidence? Premedited? Why is the latest event so close in timing with the extortion set-up? Do you really believe the motive was robbery? If this was a “hostage” situation, with plans for monetary claim, why would he execute the death in a hotel room in his name? What about the reports of a wrapping found, which contained trace evidence of a date rape drug found? Did he select an upper echelon young lady to return to the public spotlight? So many questions remain…. Were there other victims? Will he fess up to Natalie’s death in exchange for a stay in an American or Arubian prision? Bottom line, I believe his spree is finally over! Please keep up asking the tough questions… Looking forward to watching you when you are on after NG. I have confidence your day will come my “friend”….

I heard the murder weapon was a BASEBALL BAT and nothing about a tennis racket.
I am wondering how he got Stephanie to go to his room with him at that hour. Does she live in that city? It seems if she was just out late at the casino and had a car, she’d be anxious to just go home (especially with her winnings).
Joran must be a smooth operator and all I can think is that maybe she offered to drop him off at his hotel since he had no car. But, why would she go in with him? The date rape drug wrappers were found in her car so it sounds like he must have drugged her there…but how would he do that? In the video of them entering the hotel, she looked like she was walking normally (not passed out and draped over his shoulder or staggering).
Also, I’m wondering when he died his hair as on the clips I saw of him at the hotel and then leaving, his hair still looked dark.
He was said to have been there for a couple of weeks so I hope they review all the tapes and see what he is shown to be doing prior to this horrible murder.

I can’t wait for that awful Joy Behar’s waste-of-time copycat show to be cancelled and for Art to go on his own show in her place.
IMO, Joy has drug Nancy Grace’s show down and I hate that corny joke with both of them re. what Joy’s show is about and the answer is “an hour.” It is a complete waste of one hour and about Joy Behar feeding her ego, cracking of few of her unfunny lines and going from topic to unrelated topic like a crazed schizophrenic maniac IMO!

I am so glad to have the opportunity to respond to you- I have long admired your responses- or perhaps I should say “prose”. My first thought when I learned about the ‘bat” being the implement of torture- was ‘wasn’t he set to go to University of Miami on a baseball scholarship?”. Regardless, I can imagine him swinging the bat as well- angry at everyone but himself for the derailment his life had taken. Such smart and beautiful young women he murdered- I think his latest victim’s father was so kind and generous to charterize his daughter’ death as validating Natalie’s- just breaks my heart. I appreciate Natalie’s families’ response to him and his families pain as well- what an opportunity this tragedy gave us “vicarious viewers” to experience the “milk of human kindness”.
We like to think of life- generally- as a gift- until we are forced to witness its HORROR.
I am also interested in “Who is on First”- and second and third- and in the dug-out…I fear it is “US”….our culture has naturally shifted- and I don’t think we can blame those that missed the boat (the parents) – when these shifts happen- there are vulnerable people that seep through the cracks and are dealt with as “normal’s” -we can’t blame their parents anymore than we can blame them. But at the same time- we can’t let get by with it either- they must pay the price for their unfortunate positions/placement- their particular (unfortunate) combination of nature and nurture.
These young women are victims- and they are two of hundreds or gawd forbid millions- I hope they- and innocents like them- are able to rally an find peace.
I’m not THAT Deb you speak of- by the way (I just one of those 50- something girls named after Debbie Reynolds!)

It was incredibly satisfying to see Joran seethe with rage as he was perp walked here and there. His anger is so palpable. I truly hope he realizes that he f**ked himself royally. Payback is a bitch. It was just a matter of time before he killed someone else. God Bless the Holloways and the Twittys for trying their utmost to prevent someone else from being on the wrong end of Van der Sloot’s murderous impulses. Their devotion to the cause of their daughter is awe-inspiring. I hope Joran’s mother now feels as hopeless as Beth, Dave, and their spouses felt when they could not get any answers.
Let’s hope Joran spends the rest of his days rotting away in an inhospitable cell, with very unfriendly cell mates near by. His poor father died for his sins (keeping the secret of Jorans’s crimes just had to weaken his heart over time)and now he’s rolling in his grave for sure.
If only the Kalpoes would speak out now.

Has his Jorhan’s mother spoken out on his behalf. I know in an interview with Greta he said something to the effect that he chose to kinda sever relationship with his parents. But what about his mom? Do you Art or anyone else know what’s going on with his mom? Or any relative that may be out there to help him in Peru (not that I care if anyone where to help) Just wondering if mom or any other relatives ahave tried to help him in Peru?

Are there any theories why the guy went into such a rage and killed her in such a brutal way? Also, a guy like this probably has some track record of violence. Are there any possible other cases that he can be tied to? It also would seem that he might be on some heavy drugs too that sent him over the edge.

Does anyone know how many rooms were on the floor and if there were rooms on either side or one side of Joran’s room? What about across the hallway? Why wouldn’t anyone have heard some noise? Since there was evidentally a brutal, violent murder, there would have been noise unless she was drugged. But why the need for the brutal assault, if she was?
This awful, brutal murder seems pre-meditated if a baseball bat was used! I wonder if he was in the habit of traveling with one and/or sleeping with one. His mother and friends (Deepak and brother) might know the answer to this.
I hope the investigation reveals where and when that bat was purchased.
Today I heard Stephanie’s body was partially clothed so perhaps he did try to rape her and that is when she fought back. Why the need for a murder if he had a date rape drug and just wanted sex? Seems like he would have just drugged her and had his way.
If the reports that she was openly gay are true, it seems odd that she’d go to his hotel room.

Glad he got caught before he could claim yet another victim in some other country. I do have a question? Anyone know what the legal process in Peru is, in terms of how long the trial might take and when? Also what, if any, might the appeals process be in Peru? I realize it takes years and years for a trial in the United States, death row inmates last for decades and decades with our justice system. P.S. Hey Art, how’s it going?

On the surveillance tapes, it clearly looks like there are rooms on either side of Joran’s room. I don’t see where he goes out and returns with coffee as Nancy Grace reports, however unless that part was edited out. The tape she shows has Joran and Stephanie entering the hotel together, entering his room and then him leaving alone and telling someone at the desk to “leave his girl alone.” He has a backpack and duffel bag but left his passport at the desk so they wouldn’t think he was checking out. His hair looks dark and long so he must have dyed and cut it after leaving in her car.
Could someone else been waiting in the hotel room? If Joran really sold Natalie as he told Greta Van Susteran in one version, then maybe he was going to do the same with Stephanie and something went wrong with the plan, causing the violent death in the room. But, I still don’t see why that would have been necessary if she’d been drugged. If he or someone else wanted to kill her, why not drug her and then suffocate or strangle her?
It will really be interesting when the forensics come back and I hope the hotel has all the tapes from the time Joran checked into the hotel. Is there any other possible way to enter the room other than through the door shown? I’m wondering if the room could have connected to another room or had a bathroom connecting two rooms. Or, could someone have entered through an outside window? Regardless, if there was someone other than Joran involved, they had to be in cahoots in order for him to leave unscathed and not report the violent crime.
I remember at least a year or so ago, there was a special on tv showing him in Asia somewhere talking with a young woman about coming to Holland on the pretext of studying there. Don’t remember what transpired but it was not on the up and up and hinted of human trafficking. I think she was suspicious of him and refused to go along with whatever.
It was verrrry creepy thought to think that after Natalie’s disappearance and all he’d been accused of, that he’d go to Asia and involve himself in anything shady. I thought he was supposedly from such a good family and he was in Holland studying and wondered where he’d be getting the money to be doing all this traveling.

Anita van der Sloot now finds herself in the exact same position as Beth Twitty – one of her children is beyond her help in a foreign country – basically gone forever.
If Joran doesn’t talk about Natalie, Anita may be only person that knows enough to enable recovery of Natalie.
Now that Anita knows what Beth has gone through, and that divulging the location of Natalie’s body will not harm her son (assuming he gets an appropriate sentence for the murder of Stephany Flores Ramirez), she may be the key to closing the Holloway case.

Wow, Joran van der sloot has admitted to killing Stephany, a few days ago he was denying it. Was it all the evidence against him that got him to talk? Maybe he will finally tell what happened to Natalee now. Could it be this arrogant guy has been living with guilt all this time and did what he did to Stephany knowing he would get caught? I shouldn’t give him that much credit. It seems like he planned to kill her since it was a 3 hour window of time from when the entered his room and the time he left. Maybe the interrogation was enough to get him to tell the truth? Whatever way it happened, he should get the maximum for murder there and hopefully he will break and finally say where to look for Natalee. That may be a stretch at this point unless he is just tired of the pressure on him. Oddly enough, had he just lived a more quiet lifestyle living at home with his mother he would probably still be free and Stephany would be alive, but his arrogance and self entitlement out weighed the fact he got away with one killing and pushed his “luck” too far this time. Way to go Peru!

Now that he has confessed, I don’t believe the liar and his account of how and why! Can’t they give him a lie detector test and ask not only about Stephanie but Natalie and any other questions they have about his behavior? Strike while the iron is hot with this liar asap!
I am confused re. Beth Holloway’s involvement in the extortion. Was she in on a setup with LE or is she guilty of a crime? Why did she send him money if he was not going to be arrested immediately?
I hope LE consults Stephanie’s friends and family re. Joran’s statements that she was invading his privacy by looking at his computer and becoming frightened when she realized who he was! I don’t believe him. Those who know her would be the best ones to say whether or not this is something she’d be apt to do.
Why would he have left his laptop there if he left to go get coffee if he knew there was incriminating information someone could find? I’ve never used a laptop so don’t know how easy/difficult it would be to use. If nothing untoward had happened and she trusted him enough to go to his room, why would she be suspicious and pry/use his computer to check him out? If she wanted to use it for something like checking her email, why not just ask him? And, if she had used it while he was out and became understandably afraid, and assuming he’d not yet returned, I think I would have panicked and fled the room in terror as fast as I could or if he was coming in, try to play dumb and go along with him as best I could until I could escape somehow!
Hmmm, if I was in that situation and going to snoop while he was out, I’d probably have locked the door from the inside if possible as I’d be scared to death thinking he could return at any minute and get caught in-the-act. Most hotels have a chain lock on the inside and also a phone in the room but this place looks pretty seedy so maybe it didn’t.
Even if he’s telling the truth, his actions are in no way justified…he’s just trying to make it sound like he was not at fault.
I tend to think this was all pre-meditated. Maybe he lured her to his room on the pretext of wanting to show her his computer, saying it was new or had some special use in gambling since evidentally they had that in common.
Or, he could have gotten her relaxed (there were supposedly two cokes, 5 cigarette butts and date rape drugs) and comfortable and made a move, which she rebuffed and that is what angered him and provoked the assault. To me, that makes much more sense since she reportedly was found without her jeans on. It sounds like he was attempting to rape her and she tried her best to fight him off.
Another scenario I can envision is that maybe he sat her down in front of the computer ON PURPOSE and on the pretext of showing her something and then came up from behind her, attempting to overpower her and break her neck. She was active in soccer and looked physically fit so she may not have been overcome as easily as Joran thought! Maybe sports hadn’t even been mentioned and he just picked her out as his next victim much as he did Natalie.

This guy is a monster. Breaking someone’s neck is the ultimate in brutality. May he suffer every day and never see the light of day or the sense of freedom ever again. I so hope it is just an untrue rumor that two women are missing from Columbia, that is what has been reported and i pray it is only a rumor. It shows that nobody would put it past this guy to have killed others. When Peru is done with him, hopefully decades from now, send him here so he can spend what’s left of his heartless life in our prison. USA and Peru will do what Aruba failed to do, lock up a monster who will never stop killing young women. IMHO.

Art, I was going to post this on Nancy Grace’s site as that is where they keep showing the video but for continuity will do so here.
Jean Casares keeps talking about Joran leaving the hotel to go to the convenience store to buy coffee and bread. Then, she or another reported it was coffee and sweet rolls (which sounds more likely).
Then the reporter goes on to say she doesn’t know if this store has a video camera or not. Why, since she is a reporter, doesn’t she simply go into the store and ask them?
I am doubting this aspect of the story! It makes the reporting look sloppy/shoddy imo although I generally like Jean & Pat both. JVM is starting to interrupt her guests right when they begin answering a question she asks which is so rude, annoying and breaks the flow! This is particularly noticeable when she speaks with the man from Texas Equi-Search.
All that is seen in the video is Joran and Stephanie entering the hotel together and then him leaving alone wearing a different outfit but carring his backpack and a duffel bag! From that, I would surmise he never left the room leaving her their alone to search his computer!
(In my earlier post, prior to his confession, I thought maybe this tape was edited but don’t think so. By now, especially since he’s giving her snooping as his justification for the brutal murder, why not show him leaving and returning with the coffee and other item to lend some possible credence to the story?)
Notice in this video, there is a coffee pot and what looks like a refrigerator and microwave in the lobby on the right as they are entering! Do they sell any food, such as from a vending machine in the hotel? It seems very likely they would and if so, why wouldn’t he simply have gotten the coffee and cake or bread from the lobby instead of going across the street or wherever this convenience store was located.
Also, I’d think the convenience store might remember if he’d been in there and have proof of any purchase on their cash register receipt.
When I see gaps in reporting like this, it makes me wonder in general just how accurate they are on other topics or how thoroughly the investigation is really being done. This is so obvious here because of the tape and all of the talking about it since it just happened!
At first, Nancy Grace was very sarcastic when she talked about the way they were walking into the hotel and room, with Stephanie behind him. However, once again I think she is losing her objectivity here.
Even if Joran and Stephanie had been a real couple, I think they would have walked in the same way as it looks like there is only enough space to walk in single file through the lobby. Then, it almost looks like the door to the room is opposite a staircase or elevator but again, not much room to maneuver.

Another detail that hopefully will be explained is the five cigarette butts. He claims he was smoking marijuana. I wonder if he said Stephanie was or if she was known to do so. If she was, maybe that is how he co-erced her to go to his room….to smoke some marijuana. Is it legal in Peru?
However, he is such a liar and she is so young that I doubt this and still am puzzled as now, if you can trust the reporting on this story, it sounds like she lived at home. Since they’d been gambling all night and she won and was expected home, you’d think the last thing she’d have wanted to do was go into his hotel. He really is creepy looking and she is reportedly gay but even if she was bi, I don’t think many young girls/women would find him attractive.
I’d also think if Stephanie was smart enough to play and win at poker and had won a large amount of money, she’d be smart enough to beware of going into a man’s room alone. So I am just really wondering how he could have lured her other than tricking her by drugging her perhaps just before leaving the casino and whatever it was hadn’t taken effect?
If anyone has ideas on this, please post as I think it is good for young women/girls to read this and hopefully learn from it. Especially when a person is on vacation or in a different country, it can be easy to relax and let your guard down.

Persueing the wrong person has been the biggest mistake in this case. Joran Van der Sloot has no clue where Natalee is. Wake up Beth …. You are being blinded by revenge for a murder that did not take place.

Art, We saw Stephanie motioning or waving in the casino video; it appeared she was trying to get the attention of someone. When she first sat down, she sat on the chair at the end of table. van der Sloot left briefly, then returned. She was sitting in the chair by his chair; however, she still motioned or waved to someone as he returned. Maybe she was letting someone know where she was sitting! It just caught our eyes. Nothing has been reported on that.
van der Sloot is a killer, a murderer of beautiful ladies.

I’m hoping you are either taking a well earned vacation or are working on something, either the Haleigh case or the little boy missing in Oregon. That reminds me so much of the Haleigh case, a child just vanishes and nobody can explain how and why. I know it’s a long distance from where you are located but i hope to see articles from you on that case, someone needs to put more national focus on it as it’s being overshadowed by the van der Sloot case. What do you know about the stepmom, was she the last one to see him? Has the school been entirely searched now that summer vacation is here for that area? I have a bad feeling it’s going to be a long time until the truth comes out about what happened to Kyron. Hurry back Art Harris, you have been missed!! they both were addicted to gambling and it looked like they were hanging out for days so im thinking they were gonna hustle to get money. i really don’t think he planned to kill her. if he wanted her money he would have just stole it from her but something set this guy off. i also don’t like how they are treated in that prison. these people are human and not animals . now i see why that country has alot of crime because they don’t teach u anything in those prisons. no matter who it is in prison i think they should get some kind of help for their problems. but instead all they do is just throw them in prison and let others kill and the guards sit back and do nothing. it shouldn’t be like that IMO. people now think he has it made because hes in PC WITH a HITMAN . hit men will turn on ya in a second.Joran cant really eat the food because it could be poison . i just wonder if this guy is gonna make it in prison? he has a longgg road a head of him. if his mom can get to see him i hope she sneaks in because I’m scared for her life. they could kill her and do the prisoners get phone calls??

That is really scarry because he looks totaly normal, he don’t look like he would be a threat at all. I think alot of girls or women would go to his room and think nothing of it, that makes the situation that much more dangerous. This is another classic case of someone who was too lazy to work and was going to try to live a life of crime, did’nt last long though. You can tell he feels nothing for his victims, he’s not sorry at all, it’s still all about him.

My comments mean nothing, and never did, 'cept I still believe in my 'ideal' of Stern..even after my "Eyes Wide Shut"…
I switch the channel as soon as 'they' start talkin' 'bout Slooty, or BP anymore…
I'd say that BP is scraping the bottom of that barrel for all it's worth and then some…how many more 'holes' have they dug? I'd guess, that's an engineers way to stop that leak…suck it up from 'beside.'
And that takes 'faith' to believe that man is doing the best they can…with all the 'side shows' on network news channels these days.

Do not publish……… Did you get a copy of this email from this crazy person that said photos were taken of Haleigh (private parts) by her mother I assume and given out to document some type of abuse? I think this guy must be just making up stuff as he goes along. really you should try and write something as nobody is and that is when you would get your readers if you could come up with some stories, even just on why they moved Tommy, talk to some folks find out if they never suspected Ron anyway why would they put Tommy in the same Jail as Ron Cummings if this is the real person Tommy fears as some speculate, I would think you could get a story. Or do you just wait for stories to break before you write some? Cause some folks on u tube were saying that is what you do, just get the stories from other reporters, but you talk to these folks so I assume at least some of that is not true. Maybe you could interview Crystal or Marie if the Cummings and Croslins are mad at you or just dig up info on Joe, maybe that boat has passed I do not know but you know the blogger news gets so many readers just because they put up stories mostly about nothing, I know you can do better so why don’t you? You busy with something else? What about a story on the nut cases this story has brought out? Cobra? Kim Picazio, come on this woman advocated custody to someone she later said was unfit and then flip flopped again and we are dealing with a childs life there, but say you skip kim cause you like her, you still have this Tim Homsmith or whatever his name is sending out email about Haleigh Cummings vagina, real nice, you have Wayanne Kruger who can’t get her story strait, some real odd balls the gang over at blogger news that seem like they are drunk every sunday and can’t make their phones work proper, Where are some stories on Haleigh Cummings? What about a summary from the start. You know there are still people coming on to u tube that just learned of this case.
