LOS ANGELES–When Jane Velez Mitchell’s producer called to ask if we were available to do a quick update on the latest bizarre twist in the Haleigh Cummings mystery, we were 3,000 miles away from the sad and frustrating swampland that seems to have just plain swallowed up a beautiful little five year old girl.
Six months and nothing.
But with vigilant colleagues on both coasts, we got tipped to the arrest of Ronald Cummings for allegedly beating up on his bro’ in law the night before as we were driving down Ventura Boulevard, heading back to get some sleep after a day chasing some Michael Jackson twist.
We weren’t sure we heard it right and had to pull over before the news sent us into a telephone pole…
“Say what?” I asked.
Unbelievable…yet, totally believable.
Imagine this scenario:
Small town, grieving father, grieving mother, the newlyweds at close quarters living all couped up in Grandma’s trailer…17 year old babysitter turned Baby Wife who reported her husband’s baby girl missing…so many conflicts in her stories, say police, hard to keep track of them all, possibly knowing more than she’s told the cops who say she’s not talking any more…
Is it just a young couple facing tough times as they take care of Haleigh’s little brother and possibly running low on what’s left of the back child support jackpot…
A mini-bonanza Ron was indeed righteously owed, dispatched out of the blue on behalf of ex Crystal Sheffield by a generous Texas donor with NO prior ties to any player in the case. Just saw her on TV and wanted to help. No matter how loud whacko bloggers sing their spin, make things up, impersonate, insinuate, and quote from our enterprise reporting without attribution, digital desperadoes attacking websites that won’t let the drama queens and paranoid fingerprintgators play their high school games…all the while, the MAIN players keep acting more whacko by the minute…
And frustrated investigators stand back and watch the auditions for Redneck Reality, fingers crossed that someone will just get pissed off and pop.
I mean, really, Baby Wife Daddy, Hank Sr. suddenly back in the saddle and riding over to Grandma Sykes trailer with Misty Mama Lisa to try and rescue their daughter, so their story goes, from a new son in law who had to be on something, the way he was freaking out…
And brave, no-nonsense Mrs. Sykes, Haleigh’s grandmother, trying to muscle her way into the catfight, pulling her grandson off Misty’s brother, JR, and sending him back into the trailer, according to what she told police. Then trying to keep him there, the 25 year old man who robbed the cradle to marry their baby girl at 17, then allegedly tried to poison his own father in law with prescription pain pills, Hank Sr told police–pills he’d requested Ron fetch for terrible hurts after a bad car wreck that put him on crutches. Nothing like having a friendly (alleged) pharmacist in the family.
But Hank SR had to be looney tune to accuse Ron, right? At least that was the story Team Ron was putting out…explaining Misty’s Dad must have had a reaction to his own pain meds that caused him to lose it for a few hours, nothing a few days in the hospital won’t iron out. … no harm, no foul, with Hank suddenly retracting his police report, and Ron denying any so called poison plot as delusional.
You still with me?
…And now, Hank’s son, Hank JR, calling the cops again last week…after he called the cops the first time to report yelling, a deputy told my moderator, denying he’d bitch-slapped bro in law bloody. JR saying, he was just trying to save a sister from a fate worse than Satsuma ‘gators.
Only…Misty standing by her man, and just a few days later, sources tell us, Misty and Ron, allegedly chopping the head off a rat and putting it in Lil bro in law’s mail box?
Come on…What IS this… some aspiring bush league Godfather looking to send a message to any family who get out of line?
I’m out here in Hollyweird for the moment, and I can tell you, no SITCOM writer could make this up.

Every word. Kept falling asleep as I was editing so forgot to put my name in the byline til someone called. thanks for noticing. I hope I’m not wedded to one style, but can pick one that’ s appropriate for the mood that helps tell the story; biggest sins in the biz are being wrong, and boring, something I try to communicate with students when I teach college writing and journalism classes. A writer should be able to shift gears as needed, not be johnny one note.

Just like Michael Vick is surely a animal abuser. Ronald and Misty … WILL NEVER CHANGE. THE CIRCLE YOU HANG AROUND IN IS THE CIRCLE YOU BECOME. They have been around this enviroment their whole life. So of course this is how they think. These are the people that ruin life for everyone else. Can’t someone get them for chopping the heads of rats? Just seems to be, someone was stirring the pot, an old southern term.. Or we could use, throwing fat on the Fire..
Do I understand anything that has occurred since Haleigh went missing.. sometimes I think I do, and then there are times I think I have been dreaming, because everything turns around so fast.
The one thing I do believe.. Is that Grandma Sykes would wade out in the middle of the bunch of them, Grab her Grandson “RON” and send him into the House.
Yep, I believe that.
The Rat story.. If there is a mouse in our house, I have to pull my Daughter and Granddaughters and Grandsons off the Roof, Misty with a dead Headless Rat in her hand.. I think not..
Maybe they should send a Hollywood writer in, might be the best sitcom of the year..

Art, you have it right; This is backwoods hillbilly culture, a culture most of your readers are unfamiliar with. This is very similar to the culture from which I derive, and I know it well. Logic seems to get lost, and emotion prevails, even in the face of questions of child custody from the local government. Drugs prevail, and sometimes religion prevails. Ron is acting true to form. I am very concerned about his anger, but never in the world in this culture is help sought, for that is unheard of. At best Ron could turn to religion for help. I am not pushing religion, only commenting how things are.

God help you Art Harris for allowing your forum to get into the shape that it is in. Had you been a responsible person that had been keeping up on your own forums you would have seen the proof of what is being said about the rat in the mailbox.
But you have allowed so much censorship that the very people that were helping to provide you with information have now left and you as a result, write something as lame as this article that is nothing more than a rehashing of what is posted on several forums and in news articles that have been out for days.

We can only pray that one of these ‘players’ will get mad enough at the other to spill their guts! I personally don’t know how they held it together this long. They all (Cummings) know what happend to Haleigh now. No one cares about this child…why does RC still have custoday of Jr.? I thought CPS was looking into his care? I guess not…if they are leaving him with likes of these characters. Thanks Art…I always come here for updates.

Awesome job of reporting from 3000 miles away. The sad thing is that no matter how far away someone may be from this case the reality is that little Haleigh is still missing. People from all over are concerned.

Wait, there is more. Fiddle fingers forgot the Rev. posing as an official to the Jacksonville aviation police, escorting me out of town due to wile coyote slings a six pack over his shoulder and a double barrel over the other as they snatch my cell phone and swipe my sim card making it impossible to make a call out while I am almost dead with a 105 fever getting on the airplane.
Art, you made my morning coffee into a Jerry Seinfeld skit. LMAO. None of us are truly laughing though. Just taking a breather from this aweful case inwhich a 5 year old is missing and she needs her medication. Kidnapped, abducted by a family memeber, I do not care. I wrote my promise to Haleigh on a Balloon (U have the pic) and I am not backing down until I have a cross on my casket.
The BOLD TRUTH comes out when the gavel goes down and the perpetrator is in jail for life.
While it’s true this case has played out like a a twister from OZ, there is a little girl missing and no one is acting like they are truly searching for her.

News Flash for those who do not follow me on twitter.com/wayannekruger; I have round up a few caring individuals who are taking a round trip with Amtrak from SAC, CA to Canada and back (you can get off where you live) putting up posters and handing out flyers of Haleigh in all the states we can.
I am not asking for donations, never have, nor making a profit, never will. Whoever else asks to be sponsored for the trip does this on their own.

Art, Now we all know why you are in the know!! When I first saw all these people on CNN, I was thinking well, they are just uneducated hillbillies and there is nothing wrong with being that way, believe me, we have our fair share of rednecks in MI and let’s face it, a lot of country artists roots go back to the Hatfield and McCoy’s, but as time passed, and their low life lifestyle went center stage, they went from just being rednecks, to being complete low life pond scum. Ronnie is nothing more than a hot-headed punk with a lust for young girls and his “baby bride” is a complete slutbug who if she had to go to work, the most she could get with her third grade mentality, would be slinging bags of groceries at the local Piggly Wiggly or possibly flipping burgers, but taking care of small children is not her forte, but Daddykins as dumb as he is, thought she would make a fine mama and moved her sorry ass right in after barely knowing her a few months. Now my main suspect in all of this is Misty because of the story changes. Now if you are caring for these kids on a regular basis, one would know where you put them down for the night, what room they are in and yet, we get three versions of where Haleigh was that night and which one do you think those hillbilly cops think is the correct one? I say none of them because I feel that Misty brought harm to that poor child and it galls me to no end that she won’t come clean, but as dumb as she is, she has seen what is happening with Casey Anthony and how she is facing the DP and she knows that she would probably end up getting it or a possible life without parole sentence so she keeps quiet and that is a true sign of a sociopath. Now for her family. Another pile of low life losers and I almost barked with laughter when her Daddy claimed Ron tried to poison him when he gave him painkillers? Now this moron allegedly had been in a car accident and yet, he has to ask his son-in-law for pills??? I am not even going to go out on a limb here and assume that Daddy is an addict just like I think his low-life daughter is? Misty from what we all have heard has a yen for the Oxycotin? And her mama? What a toothless sea hag!!! I laughed my ass off when she told a FOX reporter that she was waiting for Misty to turn 17 before she gave permission for her to marry Mr. Pedophile? But apparently it was fine and dandy for her to live with him at age 16??? And his family is only a notch away from being as bad as hers. His mother, and I find this hard to believe, is a police dispatcher and that is my profession and this woman can’t put two sentences together without using bad grammar and diction?? I guess down there radio protocol goes like this. “Hey Rodney Lee, you need to be fixin to go down to Hwy 15, Old Man Roscoe done cracked up his truck down by the bridge, but closer to Billy Ray’s house”? And the response would be? “OK Ruby Jo I am a heading that way, did he hurt himself”? “Naw he ain’t hurt none but I declare, he must have drank too much of that “shine” Now, an educated dispatcher would never key up a mike and talk like that!!! And his Daddy almost got into it with Geraldo and all he did was ask honest questions? And the latest row with the kin-in-laws, if there was not a child missing, this could be an episode of CMT’s Chicken Fried”!!! Or “Redneck Wedding?? No, these people are just a bunch of pure D white trash and if someone were to look up the meaning it would describe these idiots to a T!!! Now Crystal. I do have empathy for her, but she should have had better sense then to hook up with Rager Ronnie and procreate with him!!! Now she too, is uneducated so I do give her a few points, if you grow up poor and ignorant, the best you could do in that circle is to hook up with someone on the same par as you. Now I do feel for her because I truly believe that she does love her children, she has tried to raise herself up and I have seen the pain etched into her face with genuine tears and I truly feel for the boy too. He should be taken away from asswipe and she should get sole custody because had it not been for Misty, then her child would be with her today. And it is just plain ridiculous that the courts saw fit to give him custody because he had a job? Did they not check him out first? With the record that he has, he would not get custody in MI!!! I do feel sadly, that Haleigh is never coming back alive and I do think she died that night by Misty’s hand and for the life of me, why have the “Barneys” not been grilling her more? If I had someone like her in front of me, and all her stories are changing by the minute, I would not let up on her at all and we do not know for sure if she did pass those two polygraphs, we only have her word. Now I realize some police agencies, including the one I used to work for, would keep some stuff from the public till they had all their ducks in a row, but these idiots are just spinning wheels, they have no concrete knowledge that Haleigh is indeed alive and if she was, surely, by now, someone would have seen her. SO I do agree with you 110% about these losers and it is people like this that get to procreate and decent folks can’t have kids. One can only guess at this point how these poor kids would have ended up, Haleigh knocked up at 13 and Jr being a raging idiot like his Daddy. Kids emulate their parents and are supposed to be raised by example and these poor kids got off to a real bad start, being raised by a loser punk and then being subjected to a brain dead twit and they have to call her “MOMMY? Keep up the good work Art, I truly admire you for having the stones to speak your mind.

My last comment was sent through too early. Please Art, take a look at the number of viewers you have lost. Take a look at what Spunky has going on that forum. Fair and balanced? I think not and to say she is smearing your name and reputation is to put it extremely lightly. LOOK and you will see. You’ve lost your best bloggers over her, why are you continuing to let this go on?
Take five minutes and review all the people she has banned. I have the screenshots, it’s not over your TOS, it’s over her personal opinion and clearly it is very skewed. Do the right thin here Art, we are all counting on you restoring your forum and believing in all of us. She has ruined your reputation and if you would take five minutes to go review all the bannings and material they have been banned over, you would clearly see what is going on here. I do not believe that Ron placed a dead rat in anyones mailbox ,..
Who would be so foolish as to take on the risk of someone seeing them place it in there with so many homes so close together ? ..
Since each side of all involved families have been polygraphed, I still feel as though perhaps the person or persons involved have not been in the “hot seat” yet even IF they have been spoken with ? ..
The rat,.. My opinion is that either the brother or family of Misty placed it there to keep the pot stiring OR someone in the neighborhood placed it there ..
& Why would they do that ? ..
With the new school year approaching, I am saddened to know that it is likely Haleigh will not be shopping for a cool new back back or a pretty new outfit ..
With tears in my eyes I pray that God will touch the heart of someone with the knowledge of what has happened with young Haleigh ..

He was the last standing Journalist that I trusted to report on this case, with any sense of integrity and guess what…this is a piss poor way to honor or find Haleigh. We can only wait and see. In my opinion Ron and Misty know what Happened to Haleigh.
Looking at Rons mug shot he did not look to me that he was held by Hank sr. and battered by Hank Jr. Seems to me there would of been abrasions as well as bruising that would of been visible if someone would of been beaten like that. Nor did I see any visible 12 hours later when he was released. According to the police report that upon arriving at the Kangaroo in Welaka the officer noticed Hank Jr. had clearly been battered in the face by someone; Hank Jr claimed Ron Cummings did this to him. LET JUSTICE PREVAIL; IT’S WAY OVER DUE. GODS SPEED

I sure hope LE dose not ignor this. If someone will go to these measures for what ever reason. Look at all the sick killers out there, they start out killing animals. That rat regardless was not meant to be be-headed and put in a mail box. Sick people..just sick. Now that Ron is in trouble TN running out getting Nejame in the mix, why didn’t they do this 6 months ago? Why did it take Ron getting in trouble for someone to speak up? I am grateful everyday that I am not in this situation, but if I were there would not be one day that I would stop talking to LE or the Media about finding my child. There is no excuse for Ron or Misty to avoid LE unless they have something to hide. LE said Ron is clear, I don’t buy it….

Every lead that is provided is acted on by investigators. Hardy cautioned the public that because there are many who claim to be valid media outlets, that citizens should be careful not to fall into the trap of believing, or by accident spreading, the untrue and unreliable claims and assumptions of many bloggers who claim to be knowledgeable in the case.

I have set up this blog to discuss the turmoil on the HaLeigh Cummings Forum on your website. I have posted for some time on the forum and I have witnessed a once vibrant forum, full of ideas and discussion, deteriorate into a much smaller forum dominated by an ineffective and biased moderator. The discussion is slowing to a trickle and as each day passes, the moderator becomes more overbearing and combative.
Dozens of posters have been arbitrarily banned or have removed their accounts. These posters are of all persuasions. Some support Ronald, some support Crystal and even more are still in the process of making up their minds about the case.
I believe that the forum and the members that have posted there for so long are a very important part of keeping the HaLeigh Cummings case in the media. Many people have devoted their time and energy emailing and calling the press and government officials to keep this case active. These people care about HaLeigh deeply.
Mr. Harris, I encourage you to read the comments that will follow this post. It will be a place where posters can voice their opinion of what has been happening on the HaLeigh Cummings forum. Each person has his or her own story and many simply want you to hear the truth about what is really occurring on your website. These people are not just trouble makers or internet trolls as they have been portrayed. Please listen to their stories.

And these people got the custody of the little boy…Don’t make sense to me. Somebody I know has dealings with the department of childrens welfare in Putnam county, they leave a lot to be desired….We moved down here from Illinois and Wisconsin area and it is a whole different place down here.

I am confused about what police are saying about the DVD player being too high for Haleigh to reach. In the video with Art she said she put in the movie for her.
Does anyone know… If Misty ran back to the bedroom to get HER cellphone to call Ronald (as he was pulling in the driveway FROM WORK) why did he have to get his phone from her during the 911 call? He should of had his own phone, after all Teresa Neves said Ronald called me when Misty was on the phone with 911. What phone did he use then? Misty said she called her mom after Ronald got home. After Ronald got his phone back and hung up on 911 who did he call? Or was it just for show.
TN sure did get there fast as stated in an interveiw with Greta. Got dressed and everthing and had time to grab a picture of Haleigh, like Ronald wouldn’t have one.
As for Crystal in an interveiw with Nancy Grace when asked what she had said to Misty, Crystal answered she hasn’t asked her anything!!! As a mother that should be the first person you talked to. She was there 3 days already. But I guess that goes with not knowing why Haleigh missed so much school! She said she couldn’t eat not knowing if Haleigh was eating, she sure didn’t send money to make sure before.

crystal child support has been paid. why is ron not out working? cause he is living off of the child support money and his poor grangmother. and by the way he has another son he does not support. should he not be paying his child support.

Why do Nancy Grace and JVM take up for Ronald Cummings as if he could possibly do no wrong? I doubt Nancy can help herself, but I expected better from Jane.
Ronald doesn’t need to make any excuses for himself; he’s got all the stupid women in the world to do that for him.

What????? putnam county could not find evidence into custody of j.r. is really sad. with all the mess going on with the cummings. oh and hank j.r. when ronald fought him the men is going out of control his cautions mind is going.the printed article did not say why Misty Croslin called crying and yelling when she needed help from PapA, MaMa, getting out of there that she no longer wanted to stay with the cummings resident home, and the girl is crazy putting charges on her Brother. what’s in the pudding now.By Shamby.

I believe Misty Crossland was messin around with Whiteboy Greg and NayNay, maybe having a 3 some with drugs included. The baby was stolen and Misty Crossland prolly knows who did it and I’ll be Whiteboy Greg and NayNay do 2. The police should sweat all three of them.
Teleny–White Boy was cleared long ago, and Nay Nay maintains she doesn’t know anything, and some think if she did, she would have revealed long ago to keep from going in and out of jail, maybe even get some reward money. Their party stopped late Saturday night, early Sunday morning, and police have been unable to prove any contact after that. They’ve bee down that road…Now if anyone comes forward who can be believed and whose testimony will hold up in court and will testify they saw Misty away from the trailer when she says she was there, watch the sparks fly and the cuffs come

You are very wrong. I got a personal call from Sheriff Hardy several weeks ago thanking me for the website and the forum, for keeping it accurate, fair and thorough–unlike numerous “bloggers” who were not raised and trained in sifting fact from fiction and doing real reporting, not just taking what one person tells them and running with it, duh. Most of your pals are indulging in rumor journalism, taking what they’ve heard and throwing it against the wall as fact, then patting each other on the back as they pose as “journalists,” including someone we no longer use as as contributor on the site who passed along a great story that was apparently too good to check—that Ronald was purportedly drunk the night Haleigh vanished, got sent home from work and showed up at a local man’s house waving a gun and talking about robbing a crack dealer to get money.
Now that would have been dynamite and thrown the police timeline under the bus had it been accurate, but it was not. The blogger source and the poster of the info who praised that blogger did not bother to track down the three people in the home when Ronald dropped by. I did, then tracked down the detectives who also interviewed them. The story was thoroughly checked out and turned out NOT to be the night Haleigh went missing, along with several other mistakes your friends published…So don’t go lecturing me on proper journalism. Spunky has more media experience in her little finger than 99 pct of the bloggers griping about her. Sorry to dissappoint you, but we’re not going to allow folks to call anyone a murderer who has not been arrested and charged, with murder. Get your facts right. Sheriff Hardy was NOT referring to Spunky; he was talking about, well, alot of your pals. So get over it, and start getting the facts right.

Why not try to come back and participate in the free flow of ideas and information in a civil way…and let me know if you don’t think people are treating you fairly after you give it a try. Just know we aren’t putting up with wild accusations, passing rumors as facts, cursing and calling folks “trailer trash” for the sake of it. Tx for writing.
