The Bald Truth: John O’Quinn, No Scrouge!

No one ever accused Houston lawyer John O’Quinn of being stingy when it comes to worthy causes.
Despite some who view at least one pro-bono client less deserving than his other charitable endeavors, The Bald Truth wanted to applaud the legendary litigator for generous pockets in his $300,000 gift to a pioneerng Texas School dedicted to helping childen with autism, bipolar disorder and other hard-to-crack issues that limit their ability to learn and function in the world.
“I knew about this school for a number of years because friends of mine who have children with autism utilized the assets and the skill and everything else about this school to help their children,” O’Quinn told The Houston Chronicle. “When they talk about how their children are helped, they cry because they’re so happy.”
The paper reported O’Quinn’s donation a few days before Christmas helped the school for children with neurological problems land an extra $1 million in matching grants.

Mr Harris.I am sorry,I do not think highly of OQ for giving money to the texas school for autism.It is tax deductable.He has to do that by the new year.to me he is trying to buy everyone, No wonder he wants to bring his court case to Texas.SORRY,I AM NOT BUYING HIS KINDNESS.

I applaud the cause and his giving to it also, but that doesn’t erase the evil about him. I think for one thing, he’s a showoff. Since this is such a worthy cause, I’d like to think I’m wrong about him, but I don’t think so.

John HAS to give to charities. Otherwise, he would have to pay taxes on all the money he overhcarges his clients. $300,000. is nothing to him. Why did he feel he had to tell the world?? To make him look good!! He could have given the money and kept it private. He gives and makes sure he is noted for doing so.
I am not impressed. Brad Pitt gave $5 million dollars to help build New Orleans. Celion Dion a 1 million, Angelina gives 1/3 of all the money she makes (more really) to charities. Many,Many give much much more that $300,000.00. That is pocket chage to John. Also, John gives and then wants wings of hospitals named after him. Whatever…

Skimpy O’Quinn’s are everywhere…getting their tax write-offs and they keep putting those dimes in those slot machines, and playing the dice, and playing Russian Roulette.
Well, he went after fields of tobacco right…but, not the Chemical Manufacturers (which he probably ‘plays’ with), not those field…dusters!!!

i’ve known about o’quinn’s numerous philanthropic contributions ever since i googled him a few months ago.
o’quinn’s income is on such a large scale that he has to be in the highest of tax brackets. people with incomes the size of o’quinn’s need a lot of tax deductions and charitable contributions are tax deductible. making contributions the size o’quinn makes doesn’t do anything to hurt his public image. are o’quinn’s contributions meant to grease the palms of people (not the charity itself) whose support he needs or might need in the future? there are a lot of charities that are sponsored by people who through their own business ventures have a lot of power and influence in the business world, judicial system, and the government.
could part of o’quinn’s generosity be of the “you scratch my back and i’ll scratch your’s” variety?
after reading about o’quinn, seeing him on tv and reading his depo in hks lawsuit i find it hard to believe that o’quinn is a man who does anything without a hidden agenda. i have my doubts that he is representing va because he has this overwhelming concern for her based on her being a mother and grandmother who needed legal help.
i have to wonder if o’quinn’s motives are purely noble or does he have a hidden agenda when he makes these contributions?

Great for those kids. However, OQ has an agenda for everything he does and you have just given him the best PR he could ever hope for. Your site is highly regarded, even by your enemies, can you hear the zombies now? OQ does not deserve the honor you have just given him.
He is still a very ruthless evil person no matter how much money he gives to charity. Does the Bible not say your right hand should not know what your left hand is doing when you give to the poor and needy. Nowadays everybody gives to charity for selfish reasons and that is not noble.

Does John O’Quinn think this makes up for all the wrong he has done? I don’t think so. He is still ruthless about other things, like trying to take Howard down. This will never make up for all the wrong he has done. Or what about all the implant patients he ripped off. But because of his generous giving a lot of people are fooled.

Granted, his generous donation went to a very worthy cause and I am happy for them but I just don’t feel like cutting him any slack and there will be no praise from me. There is something in it for him - the least being another article of praise in the news. No way can he redeem himself - no way!!!

I have a child with Aspergers so I understand that these donations are needed from corporations, to keep things going otherwise our children get little help.
As a result of giving, the tax reciept given back, better to send it to a worthy cause than lose it right?
I sure do hope Oquinn, you will get a tax donation slip against your taxes for this one, and lets not forget all the public relations you got for airing this story about how wonderful you and your donation was. Bravo O’quinn I never thought you had this generous side will wonders never cease?

How nice, that OQuinn, can give so much money, to a good cause [not Vergie]. And He gets a good write off also. I wonder if he gets as much write-off, from his pro-bono cases. I’m with Missy M on this one. I work with a national foundation run by one little old lady who helps families of special needs kids in districts that refuse to uphold federal laws adn accomodations for these kids, in juvie justice system, in society and places of faith, Anywhere these parents and kids need help.
As for O’Quinn’s donation, look who was on the Board, darlings, the C*ullen, another big oil philantropist family. So you did good John, Keeping up the good graces with the big oil families, but won’t wash the stains off of your hands.
This school is a private school reaching only a tiny percent of needy kids in Houston. I know I tried to get my son into one of these special schools, it was like applying for Yale and I had to sign loans to pay off for life.
In being a Houstonian, most of us hate the way he uses the paper to promote himself or to bury a story. I am tired of the socialites who must advertise their every deed or partay.My everyday heroes are the average person who does much, and hides what they do. Alas, they don’t have the high society connections to fund their very worthy causes.

I’ve found everything on this wonderful ‘Internet.’
Everything from fat women and sex organs, and lust and greed.
Parents should prepare children for all of ‘it,’ especially if and when they are the ones responsible for ‘buying’ or ‘paying’ for it.
So, much for trying to be innocent…

Just seems simple…don’t buy your kids computers, unless you’re prepared to tell them everything…and even then, there’s so much more ugliness.
Of course, my kid was raised on my lap, while I was creating ‘computer graphics,’ and I told her everything I knew and what I didn’t want to, and I admitted what I didn’t know and still don’t.
Yet, I protected her from the most graphic, and God Awful, nasties…
And, those magazines my husband hid…and I found.
Burst my bubble, seems I already did.

I am in shock that people are actually reading my rantings thanks so much and God Bless You all..the only thing I pray for anyone is if your child is in deep need of a specialized school because of any disability, they should never be turned away in fact each child has rights and if those rights are not met,you are the best person( avicate) to go an fight for your child because no one else will. I know been there, still doing it, but finally making headway.
Ask your congressman how you can get loan free grants maybe there is such a thing not sure but if you do not ask you never find out.
Children need to be raised by every single person in a community in order for them to turn out ok, money helps too so please dont be shy ask and keep asking the nagging works and it is for a worthy cause. The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world.

I have been looking up Joseph D. Jamail,Jr,just because he went against o’quinn on the breast implant case and won.Any way look up Him and his wifes contributions to many many different places to hel any and all,compare it to o’quinn and he sure comes up lacking.I saw where Joe Jamail said there was no feud betwent him and o’quinn,but I would bet any amount of money o’quinn can not say the same. He has said he wants to be king of torts from what I have read. OMHO

Sorry to put yet another post here Art, but when O’Quinn gives to charity, I believe he is only giving in order to “receive” something.
He has money to burn, so the crumbs he throws out from time to time, aren’t coming from his heart. I believe he always has a hidden agenda and “gets something” in return.
He doesn’t deserve any slack. If he truly wanted to help someone, he would do it and not tell anyone. That’s how someone with real class and a real heart would do it, but then no one has ever attributed class or a good heart to O’Quinn, have they?

Thanks Beverly! Yup. OQ felt that many people would fall for it WITHOUT thinking he was sly or had an agenda because of the coinciding season - Not! He went just short of giving a press conference for the lousy 300k! (i.e, for a wealthy person). Many wealthy folks give anonymously; donating a really large amount is hard to hide, but some go to the extraordinary length to maintain anonymity for truly Mega Bucks…. My “truncated comment” is of course juvenile (;-) meant to be funny, but it did make a point about the Wily One, huh. LOL…. I know this is an old post, but I wanted to comment anyway.
Who cares why he gave them money!
These kids will be greatly helped by this donation. Please don’t discourage people from making such donations by criticising their motives. Who cares if he gets a tax deduction or if he did it to look like a great guy. The bottom line is that despite the fact that many of you believe he should have given more, it is still $300K to a great cause!
